How to use the online timer

  1. Set the duration

Type into the hours, minutes and seconds boxes, use the number pad (digits fill from the right, like a microwave: 130 is 1 minute 30), or tap a preset.

  2. Name it (optional)

Add a title such as “Pizza” or “Exam” — it shows above the clock, in the tab and in the notification.

  3. Start the countdown

Press Start or Space. Pause and resume any time; +1 min adds a minute while it runs.

  4. Stop the alarm

At zero the alarm rings for as long as you chose and the face counts the time since. Press Stop alarm or Esc, or +1 min to snooze.

Quick timers

One click starts the countdown — every preset rings an alarm, works full screen and keeps time in a background tab.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set a timer online?

Enter the hours, minutes and seconds (or tap the number pad or a preset), then press Start or the space bar. The timer counts down to zero and rings an alarm. You can pause, reset, add a minute or go full screen at any time.

Will the timer ring if the tab is in the background?

Yes. Browsers throttle background tabs, so timers built on ordinary JavaScript often ring seconds — or minutes — late. This timer schedules its alarm ahead of time on the browser’s audio clock, which is not throttled, and can also send a system notification. On phones, keep the screen on: the page asks for a screen wake lock while the timer runs.

Can I change the alarm sound?

Yes — choose Bell, Chime, Beep, Digital watch or Gentle, set the volume, and decide how long it rings: once, 10 or 30 seconds, a minute, or until you stop it. Press Test to hear it first. All sounds are generated in your browser, so nothing is downloaded.

Does the timer keep running if I close or reload the page?

Yes. The end time is saved in your browser, so reopening the page shows the correct time left — or how long ago it finished. The alarm can only ring while the page is open, so leave a tab open for anything important.

Can I add time or snooze?

Press +1 min (or the + key) to add a minute while the timer runs or while it is paused. After the alarm, the same button starts a one-minute snooze.

How do I share a timer?

Press the share button next to the controls. You get a link such as timerstopwatch.com/timer/12-minutes?title=Pizza that opens the same timer, title and all, ready to start.

What is the longest timer I can set?

Up to 99 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds. To count down to a particular date and time instead — a birthday, a launch, New Year — use the countdown to a date.

Why can’t I hear the alarm?

Check that the volume is up and the sound is not set to “No sound”, then press Test. On an iPhone, the Ring/Silent switch mutes website audio. After a reload, browsers only allow sound once you have tapped the page, so tap anywhere if you see the reminder under the clock.
